(Flow) is a 8-channel sound installation that uses incoming data about tide height and wind speed as input for real time sound synthesis. Each speaker in the row of eight correlates to a different coastal location from Florida to Maine, and is controlled individually using incoming data from weather monitoring systems and algorithms derived from fluid dynamics. The sound is pushed from one speaker to another, in a sense creating a wave that spans the whole east coast, but in a single room.

The installation attempts to ground algorithmic generation of sound in the same rules that govern the natural world, and thereby to highlight the beauty and complexity of the principles underlying the flow of waves on the beach shore.

This project was created in collaboration with Ellery Royston
